National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women

History

On December 6th, we remember the tragic loss of 14 women at Polytechnique Montreal. An armed gunman entered the institution on this date in 1989 to target women in his anti-feminist attack. This day is both a time to remember their lives as well as a time to take action against the gender-based violence that persists in our society. Women, girls and other members of the LGBTQIA+ community experience disproportionate discrimination as well as sexual assault, intimate partner violence and emotional abuse. Understanding and acknowledging gender-based violence is an important first step to breaking cycles of violence and abuse. We encourage all students to recognize and act against disrespectful behaviours as well as educate themselves on the community resources available to help address the rate of violence.
