November 20th is a day to remember and honour trans individuals who have lost their lives to transphobic violence, and to recognize the strength and resilience of the trans community in the face of ongoing systemic adversity and discrimination. The Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) began in 1999 with a vigil held to honour Rita Hester, who was killed in 1998 as a result of gender-based violence. While the vigil was created to remember Rita, it also acknowledged that her death was part of a much larger pattern of violence against trans people. Each year, hundreds of trans individuals around the world are tragically killed because of their identity. Over time, November 20th has evolved beyond remembrance—it is also a day to celebrate the enduring courage, resilience, and vitality of the trans community.
